The Ultimate Guide: How to Choose the Perfect Dog Bed Size
Choosing the right bed for your four-legged friend is about more than just matching a colour to your living room rug. It is a crucial decision that impacts your dog’s joint health, sleep quality, and overall well-being. At Pet Beds Direct, we manufacture thousands of beds every year, and we know that size is the number one factor in customer satisfaction.
Many owners make the mistake of buying a bed that is “just big enough” for their dog when curled up. However, dogs move, stretch, and dream just like humans do. A bed that is too small forces unnatural sleeping positions, which can lead to stiffness and discomfort over time.
1. The “Internal” vs. “External” Dimensions Trap
This is the most common reason for returns in the pet industry. When you see dimensions listed for a bed (e.g., 80cm x 60cm), this usually refers to the external footprint of the bed.
However, if you are buying a Donut Bed, a High-Walled Sofa, or a Box Bed, the thick, plush sides take up significant space. The actual sleeping area might be 20-30% smaller than the total size.
2. Analyzing Your Dog’s Sleeping Style
Before you take out the tape measure, observe your dog when they are in a deep sleep. Their posture dictates the type of support they need:
- The Curler (The Fox): Dogs that tuck their nose under their tail retain body heat and feel secure. They are best suited for Oval Beds or High-Walled Sofas where they can push against the sides. The size doesn’t need to be massive, but it must be deep enough.
- The Sprawler (The Superman): Some dogs sleep on their stomachs with legs stretched out front and back, or on their sides with legs extended. These dogs need a flat surface without restrictions. An Orthopedic Mattress or a large Cushion is ideal. Do not buy a bed with high rigid sides unless it is significantly larger than the dog.
- The Leaner: Does your dog like to rest their head on a pillow? Look for Sofa Beds with firm bolsters. The bed needs to be long enough for their body, with the bolster acting as a built-in pillow.
3. Age Matters: Puppies vs. Seniors
For Puppies: It is tempting to buy a small bed for a small puppy, but they grow fast! A common strategy is to buy a bed that will fit their adult size and fill the empty space with blankets to make it cozy. This saves you buying three different beds in one year.
For Senior Dogs: As dogs age, getting in and out of a bed becomes harder. Avoid beds with high front lips that require stepping over. Instead, opt for Orthopedic Memory Foam mattresses (like our PAWS collection). For seniors, size is critical—if their legs hang off the edge of the memory foam, it cuts off circulation and negates the benefits of the orthopedic support.
4. The Golden Rule of Measuring
Never guess! Use a tape measure. Here is the fail-safe method to ensure you get it right the first time:
- Step A: Wait for your dog to be standing up naturally.
- Step B: Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (do not include the tail length itself).
- Step C: Measure from the floor to the top of the shoulder (for height reference).
- Step D: Calculation. Take the nose-to-tail length and add at least 15cm to 20cm. This is the minimum internal length of the bed you should buy.
5. When in Doubt, Size Up
We have never had a customer complain that their dog has “too much space.” However, we frequently hear about dogs looking cramped. A larger bed offers luxury, better airflow in summer, and the option for your dog to change positions. If you are debating between a Medium and a Large, always choose the Large.
